Quick answer
When a prepayment gas meter runs out of credit, the meter’s valve closes and the boiler loses its gas supply, usually showing an ignition fault code. Topping up does not always restore gas straight away: many smart and older token meters need you to accept the credit or press a button to reopen the valve. Once gas is flowing (test the hob), reset the boiler. If the meter will not reopen, contact your energy supplier. If the hob works but the boiler still locks out, you need a Gas Safe engineer.
Key takeaways
- A prepayment meter running out of credit shuts off gas to every appliance, including the boiler.
- After topping up, the meter may need you to press a button to reopen the supply.
- Always test a gas hob before resetting the boiler, to confirm gas is flowing.
- Air can enter the pipework after a supply interruption, so the boiler may need a couple of reset attempts.
- If the meter will not reopen, the problem is for your supplier, not a heating engineer.
Why the boiler shows a fault
A boiler needs a steady gas supply to light. When the meter’s valve closes, the boiler’s ignition sequence runs with no gas and locks out with a flame or ignition fault, such as F28 on Vaillant, EA 227 on Worcester Bosch, E133 on Baxi or L2 on Ideal. The code looks alarming, but in this case the boiler is behaving correctly.
Getting gas back on: the right order
- Top up as usual, including any emergency credit if needed.
- Check the meter display. Many smart prepayment meters ask you to press a button (often A or B) to accept credit and reopen the valve. Older token meters may need the key reinserted and a button pressed.
- Turn off all gas appliances before the valve reopens, if your meter instructions say so.
- Test the hob. Light one burner. It may take a few seconds for air to clear. Once it lights steadily, gas is flowing.
- Reset the boiler using the reset button. It may take two attempts if air is in the pipe. See how to reset a boiler safely.
If the meter will not reopen
If the meter shows credit but the valve stays closed, or the display is blank, contact your energy supplier. Meter faults are the supplier’s responsibility. If you are struggling to afford gas or keep topping up, suppliers must offer support, and you may be eligible for the Priority Services Register. See Priority Services Register and free gas safety checks.
If the hob works but the boiler does not
That points to a boiler fault rather than supply. It might be coincidence, or the pressure disturbance may have exposed a marginal component. Common causes include worn electrodes and condensate problems. Read boiler not igniting and call a Gas Safe engineer if resets do not work.
A tip for winter
Running out of credit in freezing weather risks a frozen condensate pipe while the boiler is off, and pipes freezing in unheated spaces. If you can, keep a margin of credit through cold spells. Our guide to protecting pipes from freezing has other tips.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my boiler not work after I topped up my gas meter?
The meter may still be closed until you accept the credit, or air in the pipe may stop the boiler lighting first time. Test the hob, then reset the boiler.
Do I need a gas engineer after my meter ran out?
Usually not. If the hob works and the boiler still will not light after a couple of resets, call an engineer.
Can running out of gas damage the boiler?
No. The boiler shuts down safely. The risk is frozen pipes if it stays off in cold weather.
