Quick answer
On many Ideal boilers, including the Logic and Vogue ranges, L2 means the boiler has gone into ignition lockout because it could not light, and F2 means the flame was lost after lighting. Both commonly come from a gas supply problem, a frozen or blocked condensate pipe, or worn ignition or flame-sensing components. Check the gas supply and condensate pipe and reset the boiler. If the code returns, you need a Gas Safe engineer to find the underlying fault.
Key takeaways
- L2: ignition lockout after failed attempts to light. F2: flame lost during operation.
- Ideal’s user guides often show L2 as a code to reset, and recommend checking the gas supply first.
- Frozen condensate pipes are a very common cause of L2 in cold weather.
- Electrode, gas valve, fan or PCB faults need a Gas Safe engineer.
- Repeated lockouts should be investigated rather than reset over and over.
What L2 means
When the boiler gets a demand for heat or hot water, it runs its fan, opens the gas valve and sparks the electrode. If no flame is detected after several attempts, it locks out and shows L2. You may hear repeated clicking before the lockout.
What F2 means
F2 appears when a flame has been established but then lost. Causes include an unstable gas supply, a condensate blockage that backs water into the combustion area, a weak flame signal from a worn sensor, or a flue problem. Some customers see F2 only during long hot water draws, when the boiler is working hardest.
What you can check
Gas. Does the hob light? Is the emergency control valve by the meter fully open? Is there credit on a prepayment meter? See prepayment meter and boiler not working.
Condensate pipe. Ideal’s own guidance for many models points to the condensate pipe in freezing weather. Follow our guide to thawing a frozen condensate pipe.
Reset. On Logic and Vogue models, press and hold the reset button for a few seconds as described in the user guide, then let the boiler attempt ignition. See how to reset a boiler safely for sensible limits.
What an engineer will look at
- Working gas pressure at the boiler inlet.
- Condition and position of the ignition and flame-sensing electrodes.
- The gas valve and its wiring.
- The fan, air pressure sensing and flue.
- The internal condensate trap.
- The PCB if other causes are ruled out.
Other Ideal codes you might see
Ideal uses other codes too; for example, F1 on many models indicates low water pressure. If you see F1, see how to repressurise a combi boiler. For a broader overview of what codes mean, see boiler display icons and symbols.

Frequently asked questions
How do I reset L2 on an Ideal Logic?
Press and hold the reset button for the time shown in your user guide, then wait for the boiler to try to light. Check the gas and condensate first.
Why does my Ideal boiler keep showing L2?
Recurring L2 lockouts usually point to a worn electrode, condensate problems or low gas pressure at the boiler.
Is L2 the same as F2?
No. L2 is failure to light; F2 is losing the flame after lighting. The causes overlap.
Will a service stop L2 happening?
A service reduces the chance by checking electrodes, combustion and condensate, but it cannot prevent supply issues or frozen pipes.
