A boiler that rumbles, pops or whistles like a kettle about to boil is telling you something about the water inside it. The noise is rarely dangerous in itself, but it is a sign the boiler is working under strain, and it tends to get worse rather than go away.
What causes a boiler to kettle?
Kettling happens when water inside the heat exchanger gets hot enough to form steam bubbles, which then collapse with a rumbling or cracking sound. That happens when water is not moving through the boiler fast enough to carry the heat away, usually because of limescale, sludge or a pump that is not doing its job.
Think of a pan on the hob: if you stir it, it heats evenly; if a crust builds on the bottom, it spits and bubbles in patches. A heat exchanger coated in scale or sludge behaves the same way, with hot spots where water boils locally even though the rest of the system is at a normal temperature.
Why is kettling so common in Stoke-on-Trent homes?

What can you safely check yourself?
You can check the pressure gauge, bleed radiators and make sure radiator valves are open. Those three checks rule out the simple causes. Anything involving the pump, heat exchanger or the inside of the boiler needs a Gas Safe registered engineer.
- Look at the pressure gauge with the heating off. If it is below the level your manual recommends, top it up via the filling loop following the manual.
- Bleed any radiators that are cool at the top, then recheck the pressure, as bleeding lowers it.
- Make sure radiator valves have not all been turned down or closed, which can starve the boiler of flow.
- Note whether the noise happens on heating, hot water or both. It helps the engineer diagnose it faster.
Never remove the boiler casing to look for the source of a noise. If the noise comes with a smell of gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 straight away, and if the boiler is also showing signs of burning or scorching, turn it off and do not use it.
Is a kettling boiler dangerous?
A kettling boiler is not usually an immediate danger, because modern boilers have overheat protection that will shut them down before temperatures get out of hand. But it is a sign of strain. Left alone, it tends to lead to overheat lockouts, a noisy pump, and eventually a damaged heat exchanger, which is one of the costliest parts to replace.
It also wastes gas. Scale and sludge act as insulation, so the boiler burns more to put the same heat into your home.
How is kettling fixed?

Can a power flush stop kettling?
It can if the cause is sludge in the radiators and pipework, because a flush removes the debris restricting flow. It will not fix a failing pump, and it may not clear heavy limescale from inside the heat exchanger. An engineer should confirm the cause before recommending a flush, so you do not pay for the wrong fix.
Why does my boiler only kettle when the hot water is on?
On a combi, kettling during hot water use often points to limescale on the hot water side, such as the plate heat exchanger, which is common in hard water areas. The mains water passing through deposits scale on hot surfaces. A descale or replacement of that part, plus scale protection on the cold feed, is the usual remedy.
Will a descaler added to the heating fix it?
Chemical cleaners can help remove scale and sludge from the heating circuit, but they need to be the right product, used at the right strength, and flushed out properly afterwards.
