Quick answer

An Alpha boiler service is an annual safety and efficiency check by a Gas Safe registered engineer. It includes a visual inspection, gas pressure and rate checks, flue and combustion analysis, inspection and cleaning of the burner and condensate system where required, a check of safety devices and the expansion vessel, and completion of the service record. Alpha boilers are made in Italy by a group that manufactures boilers across Europe, and are sold in the UK through installers. Annual servicing is normally required to keep the warranty valid.

Key takeaways

  • Alpha boilers you are likely to see include the E-Tec and Evoke combi and system models.
  • The service follows the same safety fundamentals as any boiler, plus manufacturer-specific checks.
  • Warranty terms typically require annual servicing by a Gas Safe engineer.
  • Common issues include pressure loss, diverter valve wear and condensate blockages.
  • Keeping the system clean with inhibitor and a filter protects the heat exchanger.

What we check on an Alpha service

  1. Visual inspection of the appliance, flue route and surroundings.
  2. Gas inlet pressure and gas rate.
  3. Flue integrity and termination. See what flue gas analysis is.
  4. Combustion analysis at high and low fire where the manual requires it.
  5. Burner, electrode and combustion chamber inspection, cleaning where required.
  6. Condensate trap inspection and cleaning. See condensate pipe checks.
  7. Expansion vessel pressure on sealed systems.
  8. Safety device checks, including the pressure relief valve.
  9. Operation of heating and hot water, and controls.
  10. Service record completed.

Common Alpha faults

Pressure loss. Often linked to the expansion vessel or a weeping relief valve. See boiler losing pressure but no visible leak.

Hot water issues. Diverter valve and plate heat exchanger problems on combis. See diverter valve problems.

Ignition lockouts. Often gas supply or condensate related. See boiler not igniting.

Warranty

Alpha warranties generally require the boiler to be registered after installation and serviced annually by a Gas Safe engineer, and some are linked to fitting a system filter. Check your warranty paperwork and keep service records. See boiler warranties and annual servicing.
