A standard service is the annual health check that every gas boiler needs. The engineer inspects the boiler and flue, tests how it is burning with a flue gas analyser, checks the safety devices and controls, and fills in your service record. What extra do you get with an intermediate or strip-down service?
Both go deeper into the boiler. An intermediate service adds the extra component checks that many manufacturers ask for once a boiler is a few years old. A full strip-down removes and cleans the main internal parts, such as the burner and heat exchanger, and replaces seals and gaskets where needed.
The strip-down costs more because it takes considerably longer and involves more dismantling and reassembly. It is the right choice for older boilers, boilers showing poor combustion readings, or ones that have gone several years without a proper service. It is not something every boiler needs every year, and you should be told why before anyone recommends it.
What can change the final cost?
The service price itself is fixed. What can add to the bill is work found during the service that you decide to have done, such as replacing a worn part or clearing a blocked condensate trap that needs more than a routine clean. That work is charged at £90 per hour.
