Quick answer
The cost of a boiler repair depends mostly on the part that has failed, how long it takes to diagnose and fit, whether the part is readily available for your model, and whether the boiler is still under warranty. Cheaper repairs include electrodes, sensors and minor valve work. More expensive ones involve gas valves, fans, pumps, diverter valves, printed circuit boards and heat exchangers. Age matters because parts for older models can be scarce and because an expensive repair on an old boiler may not be good value.
Key takeaways
- The failed part is the biggest single factor in repair cost.
- Accurate diagnosis saves money; guessing and swapping parts does not.
- Warranty cover can reduce or remove parts costs if servicing has been kept up.
- Parts availability for older boilers affects both price and how quickly the job can be done.
- On an older boiler facing a major repair, it is worth asking whether replacement is better value.
The main factors
The part. An ignition electrode or a temperature sensor is a relatively low-cost component. A gas valve, fan, pump, diverter valve or PCB costs considerably more, and a main heat exchanger is usually the most expensive repair on a boiler.
Diagnosis time. A clear fault code and obvious failure can be diagnosed quickly. Intermittent faults that only appear under certain conditions take longer to track down. A good engineer will test rather than guess, which avoids the cost of replacing parts that were not faulty.
Labour and access. A boiler in a tight cupboard or loft takes longer to work on. Some parts sit deep inside the appliance.
Availability. Common parts for popular current models are usually available quickly. Parts for older or less common boilers can take longer and cost more.
Timing. Out-of-hours and emergency call-outs usually cost more than planned daytime work.
Warranty and servicing
Many boilers come with manufacturer warranties that cover parts, and sometimes labour, provided the boiler has been serviced every year by a Gas Safe engineer. If you have a warranty, check it before booking; missing a service can void cover. Our article on boiler warranties and annual servicing explains the usual conditions.
When repair stops making sense
There is no single rule, but these questions help:
- How old is the boiler, and is it still supported with parts?
- Has it broken down several times recently?
- Is the repair a major component like the heat exchanger?
- Is it a non-condensing model running at low efficiency?
If several apply, get an honest view on replacement alongside the repair quote. Our post on signs you need a new boiler goes into this.
How to get a fair quote
- Give the engineer the fault code, the boiler make and model, and when the problem happens.
- Ask what the diagnosis is based on, and whether the quote includes parts, labour and VAT.
- Ask whether the part is genuine or an approved equivalent.
- Check the engineer is on the Gas Safe Register.
Common repairs by symptom
- Boiler will not light: often electrodes, gas supply or condensate. See boiler not igniting.
- Heating works but no hot water on a combi: often the diverter valve. See no hot water but heating works.
- Pressure rising or dropping: expansion vessel, filling loop or leak. See boiler pressure too high.

Frequently asked questions
Why won’t an engineer give a price over the phone?
Without diagnosing the boiler, any price is a guess. A fair engineer will explain their call-out or diagnosis charge and give a firm quote once they know the fault.
Is boiler cover cheaper than paying for repairs?
It depends on your boiler’s age and reliability. We compare the two in boiler service vs boiler cover.
Do all engineers charge the same?
No. Prices vary with experience, overheads and location. The cheapest quote is not always the best value if the diagnosis is wrong.
